Gem Tournament Sign-Ups for Skill Competitions and 1V1 Match-Ups! Plus a poll!
So with the arena now under construction, it's probably about time I put up sign-ups for the rest of the tournament events. XD
There'll be four competitive events throughout the week in-between the one-on-one matches. The competitive events are purely tests of skill and will be followed by opportunities for attendees to try out the skill challenges themselves non-competitively as well as receive some basic instruction and tips if they'd like. The four skill events are "Accuracy", "Reflexes", "Agility", and "Strength". I'll have descriptions for the events in the top-levels below, and if you have any further questions about them just ask!
At present the plan is to have alternating days of skill competitions and matches so that those fighting in the 1v1s have a chance to rest up in between fights or compete elsewhere, and nobody has to pick and choose what events they want to participate in. Your character is absolutely welcome and encouraged to sign-up for more than one event should they wish to!
I'll be posting the finalized tournament schedule on Friday once I know how many people are signed up where. The brackets for the 1v1 fights will be decided by an RNG and then Muns can plot between themselves who will win and move on to the next round. If the muns can't decide or need help choosing, I can RNG the winner by request. At present we have 8 people signed up for the 1v1s (listed below). If we end up with an odd number I will likely throw Yang in to even it out or ask some friends if they don't mind throwing their characters in and hand-waving matches or something but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. XD Regardless, sign-ups for the singles matches will close on Thursday the 21st at 11:59 PM PST.
Similarly sign-ups for the skill competitions will also close on Thursday the 21st at 11:59 PST. Winners for the skill competitions will be chosen by RNG but please feel free to play out your character's participation or interacting with the other competitors! There'll be medals given out IC-ly for First, Second, and Third, and probably some additional prizes like gift certificates to local businesses.
Lastly, I've made a poll with regards to the Waverly Bay Colosseum that's been built for this event. Since it's a particularly big structure and is stationed visibly off-shore of the beach, Temple, and town, I thought it might be a good idea to put it to a vote whether it should remain up after the tournament is over and maybe used for general combat practice and the like or if it should be dismantled for the now, possibly to be brought back the next time a tournament is held. All answers will be anonymous and if you'd rather not use the poll at all I've included the option to give input via comment or PM.
That should be it for right now, unless I've forgotten something. Again please don't hesitate to comment, PM, or Plurk me with questions, comments, or concerns if you have any!

Concerning the Colosseum...
I mean, let's face it: this is a pretty major change. Yes, it's off-shore, but it's still raising a structure of considerable size in the Bay. The locals may be used to Gem weirdness, but this is an awful lot for them to just... shrug off.
How is this going to impact the local businesses? What about the fishing industry? To say nothing of the fact that this could establish a highly dangerous precedent -- or at least, there's likely to be local concern about that. After all, if they can raise an entire structure like this out of the blue, what's next? Renting or buying a preexisting building is one thing, but this is on an entirely different level, and invites a lot of uncomfortable questions?
For instance: what if some other random Gem decides they're not satisfied with living in the Temple, and attempts to raise a castle? That may sound like an extreme concern, but from an outsider's standpoint, it seems more reasonable. They tolerate our oddities, but tolerance and understanding are entirely different concepts. Not to mention that we're still strangers to them.
So I feel like whether this structure stays or not, it really needs to be noticed. It just simply doesn't make any sense to me that the locals would just IGNORE this. Plus, it's a good excuse to bring Huey the Mayor's Aide back into play, or establish other NPCs. It's a great world-building opportunity!

I hand-waved Yang speaking with a few of the local businesses to see if they'd donate supplies and/or prizes in exchange for advertising or, even better, as a show of thanks to the Gems for having protected the town a full year (since Yang is shrewd enough to know how to swing a deal) but she easily could have left out the "teensy-tiny" detail of an entire arena going up just off-shore, particularly if she herself wasn't sure if it'd be there permanently or not.
She totally would never have considered the effect it could have on something like the fishing industry nor the fact it could set a precedent to the point where I'm laughing really hard because of course she didn't. She just thought it'd be fun. XDXD I absolutely cannot wait for this to get pointed out to her if it does and/or those uncomfortable questions to start because she'll be totally surprised by them. It just never would have ever occurred to her.
The kicker about all this is that one of the things Yang wanted the tournament to be was a way to celebrate and test their abilities as Gems in a (relatively) safe environment but also a way to reach out to the locals and hopefully show them that there's nothing inherently scary or dangerous about the Temple-dwellers. They just have cool powers that can do cool things. Come watch us do cool things with our cool powers and root for your favorites. Don't forget popcorn. XDXD She's trying to ease any lingering tensions and promote a better understanding of the Gems among the locals with this tournament and that is going to be such a slap in the face if it backfires to some degree. Like just..."You tried", hun.
I mean, I could picture an instance where once the tournament is over, if the arena stays up, what if a bunch of townspeople vandalized it? Or begin a petition to have it torn down for any number of reasons. And even if it doesn't become permanent, like you said, there could be a lot of concern over whether something like that'll happen again. Even if it's just a minority among the population, if they're vocal enough and play on the right fears they could cause a lot of problems. Maybe there'd be a call for the local government to start policing the Temple dwellers or something like that. The reactions could range anywhere from mild to extreme with this.
So yes, I would absolutely love love love for involvement of the NPCs and locals following this if that's something the Mods would be interested in handling or allowing (since I think that might ultimately be up to them, I'm not sure ^^;)? I'm so glad you mentioned Huey the Mayor's Aide specifically because I actually wanted to contact the Mods to see if I could hand-wave Yang having spoken with him and/or the actual Mayor at some point earlier in the month but having interactions with him after the fact would be even better!

But yeah, we should totally ask the Mods about all of this. This can lead to some really interesting places--!

And I agree. It would be very interesting to see what the public's reaction would be. I am going to sit here and laugh if Yang accidentally causes wide-sweeping problems here in this world because wow, girl. Wow. You just cannot catch a break. XD;
