The general presumption seems to be that we've been brought here in order to deal with the local monster problem. All of the bubbled stones belong to gems who are badly broken and corrupted, and appear to have been such for a long period of time. It's possible they're remnants from some ancient conflict; there are natural Gems -- Gems who were always meant to be this way, as opposed to people who've been plucked from their homes and converted such as we were -- who may or may not make up the bulk of those corrupted monsters. As I said, currently we have very little in the way of solid, trustworthy information.
Outside the Temple, you'll find a town called Waverly Bay. The locals appear to be ordinary, powerless humans, just trying to get by. Most of us believe that part of the reason we're here is to protect them. Defeat the monsters and keep them safe.

They argue that if we were just here to stop them, we'd be expected to shatter their gems, not just bubble them. To that end, they hope to find some way of curing the corruption and restoring all of them to their proper forms.
