The TV Tropes Meme!

Ah, TV Tropes, the the wiki filled with fiction colloquialisms that have wormed their way into our vocabulary whether we like it or not. Of course, many of our characters probably have their own pages for their own canons, but for this meme imagine that Cosmographia is a canon and we're making the page for it!

Post your character and list any tropes you associate with them in this game, their CR, events they've been involved with and so on, along with explanations if you feel so inclined! Also feel free to comment on other characters with tropes you think fit as well!

Have fun, and try not to get addicted! You won't be able to, because TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life. (highlight to see spoiler!)

* Brought Down To Normal: Becoming a Gem puts a powercap on anyone who already ''had'' special abilities, bringing them down to mostly human standards. Giant characters will also be shrunk down.
* Fusion Dance: A potential power, though in order to be able to use it, the Gems must already have a strong relationship.
* Gem Heart: The player characters, as well as the monsters they face.
* How Do I Shot Web: Gem-granted abilities don't come with any instructions. Just figuring out what their powers ''are'' has already proven tricky for some of the new residents.
* Sealed Evil In A Can: Defeated Gem monsters are bubbled and sealed by the crystal.
* Was Once A Man: The Gem monsters are generally known (or at least believed) to have been these.

Berry

[personal profile] lifeisfun 2015-05-10 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Flat What.: Several of these were seen in reaction to Berry and Pinkie Pie's first fusion, Turquoise, breaking the sound barrier.
strawberry_roll: (Go Team Ichigo!)

[personal profile] strawberry_roll 2015-05-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
* Heroic Mime: Berry technically can speak; however, an old injury makes it painful, so she prefers using body language and writing notes.
* Older Than They Look: Berry's 22, but is frequently mistaken for being younger. Blame her half-elven heritage.
* Supreme Chef: Started out in the Chef Life, and it shows.
spontaneouscombustion: Feel free to use with credit! (Hi!)

[personal profile] spontaneouscombustion 2015-05-11 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Action Girl: Kind of a given when you're the God of Paladins back home.
The Blacksmith: Forges armor and weapons for the other gems, once she realizes she can poof a forge in her room.
Chef of Iron: One of the best cooks among the gems, and a great ally on the battlefield.
The Paladin: And by THE Paladin, I mean the GOD of Paladins. Even starting out with none of her magic and only her sword, she's still one of the most skilled experienced fighters in the game.
What the HECK, Hero?: Pinkie Pie was NOT happy with Berry when the latter turned Dinobug back into a gem. Luckily they patched things up.

Turquoise Tropes:
Blow You Away
Flight: Well enough to break the sound barrier on their first flight!
Multi-Armed and Dangerous: From the Elbows Down
Shock and Awe

Ichigo

[personal profile] strawberry_roll 2015-05-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
* Charm Point: She considers her strawberry figure to be this.
* Flight: Her first Gem-given power... and one she always had prior to the power-cap.
* Fun Size: Her hole was about 45cm tall, and she size-shifted to go through it, making her nine times bigger than normal... and still tiny.
* Go For The Eye: Ichigo, lacking any offensive powers to deal with a Gem-bearing pelican threatening two of her friends, flies straight for one of its eyes. Ironically, this leads to her discovering a power she'd unknowingly earned.
* Huge Guy Tiny Girl: Gongenzaka and Ichigo provide a platonic example.
* Kawaiiko: In Japanese, is always called 'Ichigo-chan'.
* Meaningful Name: Ichigo means 'strawberry'.
* Mundane Utility: After learning how to bubble, Ichigo uses it as an easier way to carry things around. At least it doubles as getting lots of practice...
* Nice Job Breaking It Hero:
** Gongenzaka and Ichigo convince Fluttershy to help them extend a training session by seeing if she can heal their fatigue. This works a little ''too'' well, leading to the two HotBlooded friends pushing their limits and accidentally roasting a swath of the ocean.
** Upon meeting Yuuya, Ichigo offers her sympathies over what Gon told her happened in their home world... things Yuuya wasn't aware of, being pulled from a few days prior.
* Playing With Fire: Gained fire magic that primarily manifests as small, bright pink flames.
* Strawberry Shorthand: Named after strawberries, had strawberry-based florakinesis prior to her de-powering, and is very proud of her strawberry figure.
* Sweet Tooth
* Tiny Tyrannical Girl: Despite her small size, can be very commanding.
* Trademark Favorite Food: Strawberries, natch.

* BadassCape - He owns a black one with a red inside that sort of makes him look like a vampire.
* CatchPhrase:
** "Anything can happen."
** "I greet you."
* ConspiracyTheorist: Downplayed. He believes that anything can happen, and thus makes an attempt to be CrazyPrepared.
* ComsummateLiar
* FalseFriend: To many, though he CAN become your friend for real if he trusts you enough.
* MartialPascifist: Though he often wishes he could be an ActualPascifist
* NiceGuy: What he wants others to believe about him. But become his friend, and he'll actually be this to you.
* NotAMorningPerson

Feel free to suggest any that I missed
spontaneouscombustion: (I can see it now!)

[personal profile] spontaneouscombustion 2015-05-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I Know Your True Name: Pinkie learns Namaak's real name is Kebi when they first fuse into Iolite.
Odd Friendship: With Pinkie Pie. He's a reserved, paranoid, eight-foot long Seviper; she's a hyper, extroverted little Earth pony. They get along well enough to actually fuse!
al2o3cr: (Curtain up! Light the lights!)

Ruby

[personal profile] al2o3cr 2015-05-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hey look a section for her right over here!

But in-game...

Les Yay: And how! Although recent developments suggest this may have been intentional.

I'll toss up more in comments maybe but I've got an hour-long car ride to go on now oops. Definitely got the most important one out of the way, though.
cyan_maid: (Sly Sweetheart)

Jane Crocker

[personal profile] cyan_maid 2015-05-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Open up the Jane tab if you are so inclined, but I'll add some more for Cosmographia's development:

Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: Most if not all of the people she's met in Cosmo so far have been way out of her skepticism's comfort zone, and so far her experiences with them have helped her begin to heal from the events of her canon point. 'Cause, you know, either you're helping people out or you're sucked in by their brilliant personalities.

How Do I Shot Web?: Has no idea how to use her gem power, and has had little opportunity to try it out in the first place.

Brand Names Are Better: Subverted; she'd happily use Betty Crocker brand anything, despite what she's learned of the company's evil roots in her world, if bulk raw ingredients weren't more cost effective for selling mass amounts of goodies!

Feel free to add as you see fit!

Lapis Lazuli

[personal profile] lazaward 2015-05-11 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Official page for her is right here. As for game specific stuff, well.

Beware the Nice Ones: Has so far been pretty friendly towards the other characters. Can absolutely wreck you if she wants. Just ask the rock golem.
Broken Bird: Girl's been through some rough stuff.
Fish Out of Water: ...Water pun not intended. Lapis isn't really used to Earth or humans yet and is often confused by them.
Horrible Judge of Character: You know why this is here. We all know why this is here.
Making a Splash: Her preferred, and for the moment only, power. And boy does she make good use of it.
Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Her fused form with Bill, Fire Agate, has four arms.
magistermentium: based on art by <user name=ryu-gemini site=tumblr.com> (▲ they say it started)

Bill Cipher

[personal profile] magistermentium 2015-05-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Alien Among Us: Not that he does anything to try to hide it.
Blue and Orange Morality: A huge reason for him being such a jerk is due to having an extremely alien outlook on things.
Eldritch Abomination / Humanoid Abomination
Lean and Mean: His human form is described as very thin, lanky or twiggy, with no muscles, and he's an enormous bastard.
Eyepatch of Power: Still only has one eye, and the patch covers his gem located where his other eye should be.
Sharp Dressed Man / Man of Wealth and Taste / Bowties Are Cool
Dream Walker
Playing With Fire
Voluntary Shapeshifting
Energy Being: What he really is.
Human Outside, Alien Inside
Jerkass Has a Point: From an outside perspective, it actually makes some sense why he isn't in agreement with Pearl and Greg Universe, and doesn't have the highest opinion of Rose Quartz. She chose humans over her own kind, left her son with a number of problems to deal with (intentionally or otherwise), and the Crystal Gems kept important information from Steven.
The Nicknamer
Sense Freak / Too Kinky to Torture: Enjoys physical sensations, including pain, an awful lot.
Pardon My Klingon: Occasionally swears in a language that's incomprehensible to most lifeforms, written in random symbols and only audible as ringing/static/cacophonous noise.
Omniglot: Which so far has resulted in a few instances of Gratuitous Japanese when speaking to Japanese characters and since mun has been studying the language since high school
Bizarre Alien Sexes: His home dimension has 14 billion established gender identities, and at one point tells Dipper he finds it hilarious how even though humans aren't an entirely heterosexual species, their reproductive capabilities are limited to needing both the male and female sex. He also tells Akoya he isn't technically male either, he just happens to use he/him pronouns and present masculine most of the time.
Bastard Boyfriend: To Lapis Lazuli, even if he insists they're not exactly dating.
Bi The Way: Although really more pansexual or omnisexual, even if he has no personal label for his sexuality himself. He doesn't want to spend years filling out the paperwork.
Friends With Benefits: What he considers his relationship to be with Lapis Lazuli and Akoya Gero.
She Is Not My Girlfriend / He Is Not My Boyfriend: Insists that Lapis and Akoya are simply "companions" and nothing else.
Really Gets Around: Notably one of the more promiscuous characters, seeing as he's already hooked up with Lapis Lazuli and Akoya Gero (each on the same day they met, even!), though his flirting attempts with Lightning Farron and Yang Xiao Long were far less successful. He also implies to Dipper he's had quite a lot of "partners" throughout the multiverse.
Dimensional Traveler: Has been to around 3,000 different dimensions.
Manipulative Bastard: OH YES.
Does Not Like Shoes: Goes around barefoot when in his more casual outfit of a yellow faux-tuxedo t-shirt and black jeans.
Shapeshifter Default Form: His human form.
Trademark Favorite Drink: Margaritas.
Insignificant Little Blue Planet / Fantastic Racism / Puny Earthlings: Highly condescending of humans and other mortal creatures, considering himself a superior being. "Big deal! What's so special about Earth?"
The Social Darwinist: "It's not about whether or not humans were a threat, that's how all civilizations thrive, by conquering others! You know how the United States of America started, don't ya? People from Europe came from across the ocean, drove out almost all the natives and took over their land and resources! It might seem cruel but it's evolution, it's part of nature! Survival of the fittest, yaknow?"
Lack of Empathy: Unsympathetic towards others most of the time, but averted with Lapis and Akoya, who also had no physical form for a long time and was bullied for wanting to wear a dress respectively. He's also more understanding towards Steven.
Gosh Dang It To Heck: Very rarely swears... at least in English.
The Needless: Doesn't need to eat and it's impossible for him to sleep, as he enters the mindscape instead.
Eating Optional / I Do Not Drink Wine: He does, however, drink margaritas (and other alcoholic beverages).
Really 700 Years Old / Time Abyss: Thousands upon thousands of years old at the absolute least, and even that's probably lowballing what his real age is.
Time Dissonance: Because he normally exists in a state of quantum uncertainty (basically, outside of time), actually paying attention to time is something he's still getting used to.
Fish Out of Water / Trapped in Another World
Brought Down to Normal: Lacking in a lot of his abilities at the moment, with the inability to see past Waverly Bay's dimension or leave it being particularly irritating to him.

An artifact Powered By A Forsaken Gem will be discovered, mirroring Lapis's introduction. The parallels will NOT be missed by Pearl or Lapis Lazuli, who will find themselves in the uncomfortable position of deciding how to approach the situation... as after all, they have no idea WHO it is in there.

Alternately -- or in addition to this -- one unlucky New Gem will find themselves in that same position, temporarily sealed into an object by Peridot or some other villainous force. (This could be a matter of Real Life Writing the Plot, such as the player having to temporarily leave the character for a while in order to focus on The Dreaded School Finals or whatnot.)

My favorites that I've been involved with thus far:

-The awful misunderstanding that happened while meeting Giffany
cyan_maid: Jane in a silly disguise (Hoo hoo! :B)

-Giffany calling Bill a tsundere. No other explanation should be needed.

-Bill giving Dipper spiked punch at Pinkie's party but especially how Dipper actually gets Bill to go away and his conversation with Mabel immediately following that.

-Bill hitting on Lightning by making puns about her name, and she responds by punching him and hitting him with a chair.
al2o3cr: (That'll be just the beginning!)

[personal profile] al2o3cr 2015-05-11 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, both my favorite Giffany moments are already on here, so AS FAR AS RUBY GOES...

- "BLAKE WE'RE TEAM BLACK AND WHITE AND RED ALL OVER"
- Not crowning, necessarily, but I really appreciate how well this joke played. Also I really enjoy writing the "Ruby and her PLANT ARMY" jokes in general.

Hawkes' canon page is here. As for game-and-AU tropes? /rolls up sleeves.

Crossover - Between Final Fantasy (mostly Ivalice), and (later on) Pokemon. She is from a Nuzlocke, after all.
Death by Adaptation - Sort of. In this AU, all of Hawkes' companions (except for Fenris) have died. She blames herself.
Earn Your Happy Ending - oh boy. She just embodies this.
False Friend - Yup. Though she's good at hiding it - she is unsure of everything.
Last Name Basis - Marian Hawke.
Jerkass Woobie - She has trouble expressing her own anger over everything, and is like this.
Medium Awareness - She sees her dialogue wheel when talking, and also sees her friendship/rival ratings.
New Technology Is Evil - Hawke honestly thinks this, when she's not being amazed by it.
Our Demons Are Different / Our Ghosts are Different - She's a Rage Demon who kept a form a lot like her canon one, due to her anger over Ramza corrupting her.
Tomato in the Mirror - Hawke is still unaware she's a Rage Demon - she's reasoned it's a side effect of becoming a Gem.

more later probably

Her tropes are found over here!

Also may add more tropes later, but sleep first.

Broken Ace: Hoo, boy. She might be lacking some of her ace traits here (her wealth and popularity), but she still qualifies for this.
Heroic BSOD: Had a brief one when she was informed she's now broke.
Riches to Rags: Wealthy back home. Nooot so much here in Waverly Bay.
Teleport Spam: Her only power for the moment. Not that she realizes this herself yet.
Took a Level in Kindness: Thanks to character development that happened before she arrived. She's still working on this.

Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga | Azumanga Daioh

[personal profile] ohmygah 2015-05-11 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Her list can be found here but here's some very basic Osaka things/things in Cosmos

* Cloudcuckoolander: Goes without saying, she's a bit of an odd duck
* DreamWalker: Soon.
* OddFriendship: People she befriends are probably doomed to end up in this.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Frequently mistaken for a freshman to sophomore rather than a senior/third year student.
* OnlyKnownByHerNickname: Subverted. While even the school system listed her name as Osaka back home, Ayumu's actual name is common knowledge.
* UnexplainedAccent She's Japanese. As in from Japan. Yet sounds like she's from Texas to English speakers.
* UnfazedEveryman Zig-zagged, defied, or more likely just averted all together.. Despite being from a relatively normal world, she takes the sight of talking ponies and people in odd outfits in stride. But, well, Osaka's weird. Furthermore, she reacts in alarm at spotting someone with pink hair.

[personal profile] the_dancing_dork 2015-05-11 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
His list of Tropes can be found here. Possible spoiler alert though. For specifics however.

  • The Leader: The role that he's served in 30+ years of the franchise.

  • Adorkable: He may not seem like it, but he's a huge fanboy over a Star Trek parody which he still will geek over. He also sometimes still has his naive moments.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Hurt his loved ones and you will pay for it. That will extend to those that he becomes close to in Cosmpgraphia.

  • Blue is Heroic: There's a reason why he wears a blue mask and has big blue eyes.

  • Character Development: From a naive hero fanboy who used a cartoon as his prime example of leadership to a true blue hero and leader who will do anything to do what's right and to protect his family.

  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He has some restraint, but if people need help then he'll help them. Even with his restraints, in the end he'll always do what's right no matter what the consequences to himself it brings.

  • Hidden Depths: He may SEEM confident and capable, but hes very plagued by low confidence and insecurity. From his canon point he was actually near death after taking a fatal blow and while hes better physically in Cosmos, the damage to his confidence isn't.

  • The Strategist: His strongest attribute and what makes him especially dangerous.

Peridot | Sad and Gay: the Animated Series

    [personal profile] kindergartencop 2015-05-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
The "official" list is over yonder, on the off chance you wanna have a look at any of those. For more Cosmos-related stuff:

Fish Out of Water: For being part of an allegedly super-advanced species of ageless sentient rock people, Peridot has a pretty loose understanding of how things work on Earth.
Magnetism Manipulation: Her first power, though she still hasn't necessarily gotten the hang of it. Or figured out that she has it in the first place.
Paper-Thin Disguise: Though she's been pretty good about keeping her head down so far, her idea of "inconspicuous" is maybe a little skewed.
    *Inconspicuous Trenchcoat
onemorechapter: (Take a look. It's in a book.)

    Blake Belladonna

    [personal profile] onemorechapter 2015-05-11 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Blake's got a canon section right over here. As for Cosmos-specific stuff...

    -Aura Vision: Her ability.
-Does This Remind You Of Anything ?: This is a conversation about watching two people try to succeed at fusion.
-Les Yay: Hey, Ruby's linked it I can link it too.
-Mysterious Informant: Has a tendency to answer people's questions without ever telling them her name.
-Not So Above It All: Technically listed on her actual tropes page, but between getting ice cream with Ruby, indulging Steven, and dancing with Yang, this definitely applies here.

As the others have said: the canon tropes. Weiss's major ones "fantasy racism, defrosting ice queen."

    A couple of in-game ones:

The Empath, obviously! She'll get a Heart is an Awesome Power! upgrade once she figures out that her empathy goes in both directions, if she wants it to (mind bullets. she's getting mind bullets.), but right know it's very much What Kind of Lame Power is Heart, Anyway? (See also: Power Incontinence, since she can't turn it off.)

Tsundere is also a pretty big one. See: some recent developments for an example.

Just gonna re-link the canon tropes since that sums up pretty much all of the important ones. Personal favorites include a rare female example of a "Boisterous Bruiser" and "'I am Great!' Song" because no really, let her sing you the song of how badly she's going to beat you into the ground.

Can't think of any new ones she's acquired in-game quite yet but feel free to link suggestions!
